Crying it out my least favorite stage :( but definitely necessary in order to achieve good sleeping habits. I believe that once a baby is able to soothe himself/herself you are able to let them cry it out. Usually this happens in between 3-5 months old. What I do is I sing a song (the same song every time so they associate it with bed time) I lay them down and walk out of the room. I let them cry for 15 minutes then I will go back in and rub their back and then leave again. but this time for 20 minutes. I do not let them cry it out for more than 30 minutes. Sometimes I will even send my husband in and once the baby realizes they aren't getting mom they usually stop fussing and go to sleep. Crying it out is important as it is allowing your baby to find a way to self soothe which is especially important in the middle of the night when it wakes up. If it can self soothe then it can cry for a minute then figure out a way to put himself back to bed without needing you to be up constantly throughout the middle of the night.
I know it's hard but try to let your baby figure out how to soothe himself. Developing good sleep habits is crucial for developmental purposes and for your well being :)
